Varicose Veins Prevention and Tips

When heredity predisposes a person to varicose veins, it is not easy to avoid them. Nevertheless, by maintaining good muscle tone and physical fitness, the risk of varicose veins can be reduced or delayed. Complications are also minimized.

Basic preventive measures

Move: Exercises that involve the legs, such as walking, swimming, and cycling, are particularly indicated to prevent varicose veins. Pressure on the muscles surrounding the veins eases venous return.

Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight puts excessive pressure on the leg veins, which impedes venous blood return to the heart.

Monitor your diet: Low salt intake helps prevent swelling caused by water retention. Eating foods high in fiber can help prevent constipation. Be aware that forcing a bowel movement can increase pressure in the venous system.

Tips to relieve symptoms and prevent varicose veins from getting worse

  1. Raise your legs. It is recommended to do this 3 or 4 times a day, 15 to 30 minutes each time. Keep your legs elevated higher than your heart. You can, for example, lie on a bed or a deckchair with pillows under your legs.
  2. Vary your posture. Avoid standing or sitting for too long. Remember to stretch, move and sit occasionally to stimulate circulation in your legs when you are standing. When working in a seated position, avoid crossing your legs and bending your torso forward for long periods of time.
  3. Move your feet and ankles. When sitting or standing for long periods of time, remember to point your toes up and down to promote venous return. Repeat several times a day.
  4. Move during a trip. It is recommended to stand up and stretch regularly for a few minutes during a long plane trip. You can also, for example, slowly raise your heels to contract your calf muscles.
  5. Apply cold water to the legs. This helps to relieve and reduce swelling.
  6. Avoid heat sources. Heat dilates the veins. Avoid very hot showers and baths, saunas, sunbathing, tanning salons, and hot waxing.
  7. Avoid tight clothing. These can interfere with venous circulation. Beware of girdles, narrow jeans, socks with elastics that tighten the ankles or knees, and shoes that are too narrow.
  8. Wear shoes with flat heels. High heels contribute to the sagging of the arch of the foot and therefore impede circulation. Shoes with low heels work the calf muscles more, which helps the veins do their work.
  9. Wear compression stockings. They can be used preventively by people who work standing up and in airplanes.
