How does cold wax epilation work?

The principle is the same as hot wax: cold wax epilation removes hair from the root. The wax actually acts as a kind of sticky strip that attaches to your hair. So when you remove the cold wax, you remove your hairs at the same time. After epilation, the hair will grow back less coarse, finer: while the first epilations may bring out a few tears, subsequent epilations will be much easier. The time it takes for the hair to grow back will also be longer: for a few weeks after epilation, your skin will be soft and satiny…

Cold waxing: for whom?

Numerous are the women who have to chase away unsightly hair, be it on the legs, arms, armpits, eyebrows or bikini lines. And there are different methods to achieve this, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Cold wax hair removal can be particularly convenient if you have sensitive legs or poor circulation. Unlike hot wax, cold wax limits the dilation of small vessels and prevents redness. No burning risk either.

It is a process that is also suitable for those with dry skin because it is often the case that cold wax strips are enriched with softening agents such as aloe vera or sweet almond, known for their protective, soothing and regenerating properties. Finally, for those who swear by organic cosmetics, Dr. Elix has developed a Hair Growth Inhibitor Expert Lotion that does it all: moisturizes, softens, soothes, protects, balances, significantly delays regrowth of the hair, reduces their number and diameter and improves the hair follicle’s sensitization against androgen metabolites, which prepares for a real autonomy and definitive or durable anti-regrowth solution.

Another advantage of cold wax hair removal is its convenience and ease of use. It is possible to use it anywhere, at any time. At home or at the beautician’s, in your bathroom or while watching TV, before going to the beach or before meeting your partner… It does not require heating time, shaving cream or mixing various ingredients.
It is also possible to use cold wax for any part of your body: legs, arms, bikini line, eyebrows, mustache… Cold wax usually comes in the form of ready-to-use strips of different sizes and shapes that adapt to the areas to be waxed without any worries.

Disadvantages of cold wax

Although it is very handy, cold wax also has its little drawbacks. Its main black point comes from its texture: even in strips, it cannot spread as well as hot wax on the area to be depilated. This means that small, fine hairs, down or certain hard-to-reach hairs cannot be removed with cold wax. Hairs less than 5 mm long, for example, cannot be pulled out. So, before starting new depilation, you’ll have to wait until the hairs grow back and are long enough… Not very glamorous, all that, but it’s still an option to consider!

In addition, the texture of the wax means that you won’t be able to easily remove hair from the small hairy areas of your body, or those, such as the armpits, where the direction of growth is not homogeneous.

Our tips for a successful waxing

Hair removal (with cold or hot wax, electric depilator, depilatory cream or razor) also means preparation! Just because the cold wax method is so easy does not mean that you have to neglect the basics to have a baby’s skin after the operation.

A small reminder of good practices for a successful epilation

Do a scrub to prepare your skin beforehand. This will eliminate dead skin and limit ingrown hairs. For areas of the body such as the legs, choose a formula with coarse grains or a loofah glove. For sensitive areas (eyebrows, mustache, bikini lines), prefer a gentler exfoliant.

Moisturize your skin. Even if it is a daily gesture, it is best not to skip this step 3 or 4 days before a hair removal session.

Just before waxing, a good hot shower is recommended. This will open the pores, facilitate hair extraction and limit the appearance of unsightly pimples after epilation.

Epilate in the direction of the hair! As with hot wax, it is best to wax in the direction of hair growth. Epilating in the opposite direction, even if it seems, at first glance, more effective, you will suffer during hair regrowth: pimples, itching, redness, ingrown hairs?

If you feel a little pain after pulling the wax strips off, you can apply a cold compress to the depilated area (legs, armpits, face…) to reduce the sensation.
