Gout genetic and lifestyle influences - gout prevention - Dr. Elix

Gout is the result of a metabolic disorder. This painful disease is the result of the too high uric acid level in the blood, i.e. hyperuricemia. Most people with gout have a congenital predisposition to increased uric acid levels. Their metabolism produces too much uric acid or eliminates too little in the kidneys.

The main triggers for a nighttime gout attack are heavy alcohol consumption or a large meal of meat, fish, or seafood. These foods provide the body with a lot of purines, which are converted into uric acid by the metabolism and eliminated by the kidneys.

However, heavy alcohol consumption weakens the kidneys. The combination of these two phenomena leads to an increase in the level of uric acid which, above a certain quantity, starts to crystallize in the blood vessels. Sharp-edged uric acid crystals lodge in joints and soft tissues, where they cause inflammation, swelling, and severe pain.

Heredity or lifestyle?

The factors that trigger a gout attack are part of general medical knowledge. This was recently shown in a telephone survey of 663 people between the ages of 35 and 75 conducted by the LINK research institute. Among the triggering factors, the respondents cited poor nutrition and alcohol consumption as the most important.

Less well-known examples include the excessive consumption of supplements that promote mass muscle gain, rich in proteins and creatines. The large quantities of metabolites resulting from the assimilation of proteins and purines can doubly overload the kidneys.

However, lifestyle gout triggers seem to be much better known than its genetic origins. Only 16 percent of survey participants cited genetic predisposition to high uric acid levels as a gout trigger.

Large-scale studies conducted by the “International Uric Acid Genetics Consortium” (GUGC) have enabled research on gout to identify at least 28 genetic risk factors responsible for increased uric acid levels.
